The church was designed by Frederick C. Sauer. While at Technical School in Wittenberg, Germany he worked as a stone cutter, brick layer arid carpenter. After graduation in 1879 he came to Pittsburgh at the age of 19. Sauer closely followed the desires of the Pastor, Holy Ghost Father, the Reverend Anthony Jaworski, C. S. Sp. and gave the Polish immigrants a church reminiscent of their native land and where they could feel at home. Sauer also designed Saint Stephen, Hazelwood; Saint Mary Magdalen, Homestead; Saint Mary of the Mount, Mount Washington; Saint Joseph, North Side; Saint Nicholas, Troy Hill; Saint Coleman, Turtle Creek. Sauer was also architect for the Latimer School on the Northside and the fantastic hillside colony of homes off of Center Street in Aspinwall. |
